Researching the serial no of a C G Bonehill Boxlock

Post by Barry Gregory 440 » Mon Feb 24, 2020 7:37 pm

I am looking for any information about a C. G. Bonehill side-by-side boxlock shotgun stamped with a serial number 1593 N.

The bar of the action is also stamped with the words 'BONEHILL PATENT'.

None of my reference books have any serial number information for C. G. Bonehill.

Does anybody have any idea as to when this might have been manufactured?

Unfortunately, the original barrels were replaced around 1966 so the original Birmingham proofing marks have been lost.

Barry, all the Bonehill ledgers were destroyed at the demise of the firm in 1962.

The only way you may get some idea of the age of the gun is by researching the gun auction sites for past auction catalogues, whence by recording serial numbers and other clues, such as patent nos and proof marks, you may begin to get an idea.

Unfortunately Bonehill made very many guns and the patent Interchangeable gun could perhaps cause you even more headaches! The fact that the number on your gun is low and has a letter suffix might indicate separate serial numbers for styles or grades of gun, but I'm just speculating there.

Many thanks for the feedback.

From what I have already read about the demise of the Bonehill business, I knew it was not going to be simple.

It’s a pity the original barrels were replaced in 1966. At least if I had the original proof marks it would have given me a band of dates. Puzzled about the meaning of the letter ‘N’ after the serial number.

Thanks again.

In the period 1896 to 1904 two numbers with an N suffix have been seen. These are 1138N and 2130N. The previous number was 2271 and the later number was 3431.
