Webley/Holland & Holland

Post by Bjoern Ludvigsen 141 » Fri Aug 23, 2019 11:57 am

Gentlemen

I have just received a boxlock ejector marked "Shot and regulated by Holland & Holland. It looks to me like a Webley 700,with H & H engraved on the action, and maybe slightly better cut engraving than the average mod 700.I can`t find any sign that this gun has ever been fired.
28" barrels,.729,a twelve bore,2 3/4" chambers etc..

The serial number is 38071,a H & H number??

I have seen on the internet, different websites that these guns demands a higer price than a Webley 700 in the same condition. Can really H & H markings increase th price with almost the double??
I will post a picture soon.

Regards from Norway

This could well be a Webley 700 the serial number dating it to about 1970 although I would have thought Holland & Holland of all people would have gone for a 701 or 702 as there was not much difference in the price. In 1958 a 700 cost about £125, a 701 was £130 and a 702 £140. I guess a 1970 700 cost about £650. Webley's guns after about 1958 were of lower quality.
This gun was probably bought in-the-white and would have been engraved by H & H.
My first double was a 701 bought in 1958 when Webley was having trouble with supply. I sold it to get married - big mistake! I have just bought a 1973 model 700 with 28" barrels bored 1/4 and 1/2 from a guy disposing of several guns. It was more or less in mint condition except for a scratched stock which I have repaired and re-stained - much better than the original. I got it for £300 but would value it, hopefully, at £1150. Some mint condition ones are on offer here in England by dealers at £2000 to £4000. If pre-1958 I might pay £2000 but not more. Ridiculous !

Thanks John

Birmingham date code,AB6 in a three split circle..1975?? When did W & S change their series.Guns from the sixties or seventies had 6 digits numbers? Or not?
I will try to take a good picture of the action to se if this really is a mod 700.The gun is totaly unmarked exept for the H & H markings.
