Looking at this gun again, the crossed sceptres with BPC mark was, when accompanied by the crossed sceptres V mark, definitive Birmingham proof for the period up to 1904. I am sure the gun was made by William Ansell following an order prompted by C A Ansell in South Africa. 67 is the serial number, William was not trying to boast about how many guns he made so his number probably started at 1 !
John, thanks. Looking at the proofmarks, there are no post 1875 Bore or Muzzle notes and no Not for Ball marks. I cannot clearly read the Crown/BP mark. It could, then, fall into the 1855-1868 period, or more likely the 1868-1875 period. Your thought on who made the gun and who ordered it makes a lot of sense.
