Fitting new barrels project

Post by Allen Peterson 44 »

I have fitted a 32 inch set of barrels to a live bird gun I use to shoot sporting clays with. Here in the states it is difficult to get a set of barrels that are suitable to fit and strike to match an action. I just got it back from the engraver. I will shoot it a bit to make sure everything is in good working order before rust bluing.

You seem to have achieved the almost impossible. I know of only one person here in the UK who had replacement barrels made, they cost him a fortune and he took the maker to court refusing to pay because he said the new barrels were nothing like the old. He lost the court case because so-called expert evidence was that the barrels were good enough.

John I did not have the barrels made. That would have been extremely expensive. What I did was find an old lower grade gun with a set of barrels that I could strike to the action I had. This is difficult to do as every action is a little different. Finding a useable set is a lucky find Converting the extractors to ejectors was not to difficult. And using the same for- end not perfect but close enough and acceptable. Once together I sent them to an engraver to match the barrel wedges and inlet the number on the rib. When finished I will have a shotgun stocked in high grade Turkish walnut fitted to my dimensions the action polished and re case hardened. Almost a bespoke gun at a fraction of the cost I can pass this on to my grandson.Image

while at a shoot i came across a third set of barrels that I could work with. After striking the barrels and converting to ejectors. I sent them out for engraving and bluing. Now I have a very versatile shotgun set 28inch open choked, 30 inch light mod choked and 32 inch full choked. a budget priced custom gun.
