William Cashmore

Post by John 39 »

Hi I would like to find out more about an early W Cashmore gun we have in our museum but don't wish to pay to join. Is there concession for not for profit groups? Or is there someone I could email with information I am after? Many thanks Hayley - Collections Manager, Millthorpe Museum.

Hi Hayley,

This is not a gun of any quality and it is in poor condition, it is a gamekeeper's or farmer's gun, sorry to say it has no value except as a "wall Hanger". I certainly wouldn't use it. I expect the barrels are more pitted inside than out ! Cashmore made a lot of guns some of very good quality. This gun may have been made using his 1884 patent.

My email reply to you includes the full history of the firm.

The proper description would be a double barrelled back-lock hammer gun with 30 inch (?) Damascus barrels. The hammers are re-bounding, the rib extends with a top bolt into the action which is operated by a top lever. The gun has border engraving with the maker's name engraved on the locks. The stock is of poor quality wood with a semi-pistol grip. Unusually, the retailers name is marked on the stock - no reputable retailer would do that so I would suspect the original owner took the gun out to New Zealand and when he died it was sold to the nearest hardware dealer ! The serial number records are poor but I can say that the gun dates to late 1880s or early 1890s. Importantly, it would bear Birmingham black powder only proof marks and would never have been used with Nitro powder. In brief, it is of no interest in the open market and I would chuck it !
