Hello

I am trying to find out if anyone has any knowledge of weather the sales ledgers for C B Vaughan or E Whistler still exist.
Both companies had a reputation for holding a large stock of used guns. Both were located in The Stand, in London at one time.

I have read sometime ago that C B Vaughan was bought out by Moss Bros but cannot now find the source of this information. Is anyone able to confirm this or have any information about it? Any help appreciated.

There has never been any report of existing records and as both firms only ever bought and sold second-hand guns there would be no ledgers in the usual sense. Interesting that both firms may have been bought by Moss Bros, never heard that before but it is not unlikely!

Sales ledgers would have been kept from 1920 if not previously, following the introduction of the Firearms Act in 1920.This was certainly the case with Harrods whose ledgers start in 1920 and which I have examined personally.

Weather the Vaughan or Whistler ledgers still exist is another matter, but I will be contact Moss Bros soon to make inquiries. Moss Bros also had their own gun department at one time and issued a catalogue.

Here is some information I got back from the National Archives in Kew on C B Vaughan.Still no date on when Moss Bros acquired them, but we now know when they were dissolved.

"The list of Moss Bros Ltd records (ref: NRA 28363) refers to a survey of the records undertaken in 1985, which includes the following records relating to CB Vaughan (Guns) Ltd:

Annual accounts 1968-1977 (ref: C/1)
Seal (ref: C/1)

As far as we are aware the records are still in the possession of Moss Bros PLC. We do not have a contact person at Moss Bros, but you can contact them through their website.

"I was unable to find much information about CB Vaughan (Guns) Ltd. They were established something in the 1700s and when they registered their business was given the Company No: 00387475. By the late 19th Century, they were based at 39 Strand, London WC2 and were in the money lending/pawn broking trades. As some point in the 20th Century, they began to specialise in guns and were acquired (again date) unknown by Moss Bros Ltd. Moss Bros Ltd continued to mentioned them in their annual accounts until 1978 when the Company was officially dissolved and removed from the ledgers at Companies House. Copies of Moss Bros annual accounts are available on their Companies House entry.

Hopefully, Moss Bros Ltd will be able to help you with the history of CB Vaughan (Guns) Ltd. You could also try contacting the London Metropolitan Archives to see if they hold any additional information on the Company’s history. Their contact details can be found on their Find An Archive Directory entry."

Once I hear back from Moss Bros I will post the response.
