Shotgun barrel makers stamps

Post by Barry Gregory 440 »

Does anybody know of list or database of the stamps used by some of the shotgun barrel makers?

I have been looking at a set of 12-bore barrels where the proof marks indicate that they were first proofed between 1954 and 1989.

However, just in front of the flats and lumps on the underside of the barrels there is a stamp on each barrel which is definitely NOT a proof mark. I think they could be the stamp of the barrel maker but several Google searches have failed to produce much information.

Can anybody help?

(I have attached a photograph which shows this example. The symbol looks like a deer, sitting, with the letters ‘CR’ underneath.)

Never seen that before, could be barrel maker or gun maker. The deer suggests Scottish.

Further investigations have suggested that the marks are not from a barrel maker but could be the trade mark of the maker of the steel tubes used for the barrels.

(For example: Whitworth steel tubes for barrel were often trade Mark stamped with a wheatsheaf.)
