Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

I do have a photo of his grave. However, it is nothing more than a shallow hollow in the grass as the headstone has long gone. At some stage I'd like to have a small memorial stone made to erect over the space to commemorate this excellent craftsman. I am in touch with the family and shall ask about...

Re: Prices on shotguns in decline?

I don't especially follow the prices of guns, though I view them often at the auctions. My sense is that prices have generally either stood still or, in some cases, gone down over the last couple of years. My particular interest is British sporting shotguns. Good quality still commands a good price ...

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Sportarm legally own the Hussey name and have the records, as much as they are. I have not viewed them - yet!

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Robert, these two cuttings from the Sporting Goods magazine tell their own story: Mar 1899 Sporting Goods: We hear that HJ Hussey has started in business as a gunmaker on his own account. His premises are at Woodstock St, off Oxford St, London Jul 1899 Sporting Goods: Mr HJ Hussey has secured premis...

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Robert, I'm still researching Hussey, as I have for the last five odd years. His grave is just up the road from where I live, for example. I just happened to be able to fill in on the guns around Jim's serial number. The nearest guns I know of to yours are the pair of Imperials 14028 & 29. The next ...

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Hi Jim, thanks for letting us know about your Hussey. I know that the gun before yours, that is 14017, was a single, whilst 14015 & 16 were a pair. Similarly, there was a pair built immediately after your pair, being 14020 & 21. They would have been completed around 1900, by my estimate. Have you ch...

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Robert One way to date your gun, albeit approximately, is to look at the proof marks on the barrel flats. Below are the marks used by the London Proof House between 1896 and 1925. They changed in 1904, which clearly means that all they will tell you is whether the gun was proved before or after 1904...

Re: HJ Hussey Ltd Serial Numbers

Hi Robert and thank you for your post. Sorry to read that Sportarm have been unresponsive. They are a little too far away from me to just pop over, but I do intend going to visit them one of these days. The serial numbering used by HJ is a little confusing. He certainly did use the 14### series for ...

Re: James Fairman

From Wimbledon take the tube to Waterloo, change there into Southeastern all way to Blackheath. Not too bad a journey?

You'll still be able to get your pasty at Wimbledon!
