Re: Vickers Rifles .242 .318 .404 Survey

James Your rifle is a dead ringer for the one in the Vickers Armstrong catalogue I have, including the flattened bolt knob. The action does appear to be a military action with the charger guide. The illustrations in the catalogue appear to have the same action for the .242 and the .318 round. The .4...

Re: Vickers Rifles .242 .318 .404 Survey

Hi Mike What you say may well be the case then. Its difficult to come up with much that is certain. Are there any markings on your rifle which would indicate which German company made the rifle. I have read that Vickers rifles were made by DWM. However, I have also read that DWM did not make sportin...

Re: Vickers Rifles .242 .318 .404 Survey

The rifle has London proof marks which I would expect to see on a Vickers rifle. It has a four digit serial number which again I would expect to see, on a Vickers rifle. I have only personally examined one Vickers branded - I say branded as they did not actually make them as such – rifle, and this w...

Re: any in depth look at Braddells out of Belfast

Heard back from the Public Records Office of Norther Ireland regarding Braddells records. It turns out they have a few records which are not in private ownership as I thought, but no registers of gun sales unfortunately.

Re: Need help with proof date

I thought that if the cartridge length was shown such as 2 1/2" this proof marking was used from 1925 to 1954?

Re: any in depth look at Braddells out of Belfast

The shop is gone but the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland records the records as being in private ownership. This may include the firearms registers used from 1920 onward to record sales of the guns they retailed, bearing in mind they did not manufacture anything themselves. Regards AlanD S...

Vickers Rifles .242 .318 .404 Survey

I am interested in the bolt action center fire sporting rifles made by Vickers and from 1927 Vickers Armstrong, between the wars. The three main calibers offered would appear to be .242, .318 and .404. However, there may have been other calibers offered such as .30/06. I am building up a data base o...

Re: C B Vaughan & E Whistler Second Hand Guns

Here is some information I got back from the National Archives in Kew on C B Vaughan.Still no date on when Moss Bros acquired them, but we now know when they were dissolved. "The list of Moss Bros Ltd records (ref: NRA 28363) refers to a survey of the records undertaken in 1985, which includes the f...

Re: C B Vaughan & E Whistler Second Hand Guns

Sales ledgers would have been kept from 1920 if not previously, following the introduction of the Firearms Act in 1920.This was certainly the case with Harrods whose ledgers start in 1920 and which I have examined personally. Weather the Vaughan or Whistler ledgers still exist is another matter, but...

C B Vaughan & E Whistler Second Hand Guns

Hello I am trying to find out if anyone has any knowledge of weather the sales ledgers for C B Vaughan or E Whistler still exist. Both companies had a reputation for holding a large stock of used guns. Both were located in The Stand, in London at one time. I have read sometime ago that C B Vaughan w...
