Re: London proof marks on a .410 Hammergun
Your wife is going to be pleased with that black stain on her carpet. Try Swarfega, I use it on shirts, trousers everything. Dab it on, leave it for an hour or two, wash normally, deny everything. All Cogswell guns were all proved in London. This mark is either the lion rampant over GP mark or the L...

Re: R Bolter shotgun
He is not listed anywhere and was probably an employee of one of the London companies who made a gun for himself after he retired.

Re: George H Daw Gunmakers
As their history on this website says, the George H Daw name is now used by Bill Blacker & Sons (inquiries@billblacker.co.uk or telephone 01268730375), barrel makers and repairers but now also makers of shotguns and double rifles. It may be that Bill Blacker & Sons has closed. Your gun proba...

Re: Thomas Wild
Hi Anders, Sorry to be so long in replying. Your gun seems to have been originally sold to Perrins, a gun retailer in Johannesburg, no doubt related to one of the many Perrins gun makers in Birmingham. It seems he sold the gun to a Mr J Buchal on 16 May 1924. It must have come back to England becaus...

Re: russell hillsdon royal counties
Wrights supplied many retailers but they were a small firm and it seems to me that it has become fashionable to name them but unlikely that they were the makers. They could not have made more than a few hundred guns but those they did make were of very good quality.

Re: Thomas Wild
Can't be of much help. The first record book starts with 7420 in 1894 which indicates your gun dates to 1892/3.

Re: Cogswell & Harrison email from Charles posted by moderator
Hi Charles,
About 10,000 Cogswell & Harrison serial numbers between 1906 and 1907 have been lost, but 1906 started with 29892, 1907 starts with 41550 so your guns can be dated to 1906.

Re: Birmingham gunmaker H Cross
The Cross family were active well into the 1900s. You need to look at the history of Joseph Wheeler Cross of Price street. Thomas Cross had a son named Henry / Harry (b.1873) who may be the person you are looking for. I've yet to get around to checking the 1921 census.

Re: William Cashmore
Hi Hayley, This is not a gun of any quality and it is in poor condition, it is a gamekeeper's or farmer's gun, sorry to say it has no value except as a "wall Hanger". I certainly wouldn't use it. I expect the barrels are more pitted inside than out ! Cashmore made a lot of guns some of ver...
