Agnew serial number records no longer exist so estimates are from proof marks. Your gun dates to within a couple of years of 1910-1912.

I had a 701 bought in 1959, £125 when ordered, £130 when delivered 4 months later. sold for £500 in 1971 when I had to get married - I resisted but my wife insisted. The 702 model was £140. The rifle dates to 1877 to 1878, that is all we can tell you. We've never dealt with the Royal Armouries, they may be able to tell you who was the first owner and give other info.

I think 1896 is correct. The serial numbers we have are derived from the proof marks so are not specific.

Colin Wild took over the business in 1964 and moved the firm to 55-56 Price Street, they then moved to Unit F/F1 New Buildings, 63 Price Street, Birmingham B4 6JZ. I am sure they closed soon after but I have a telephone number 0121 3592303. Someone trading at New Buildings may be able to help you.

The records we have are poor, they say this serial number dates to 1875 to 1887, so they were obviously derived from the proof marks on guns rather than any of the firms actual records - which don't seem to exist. Well done for dating the proof marks! The barrel is choked so don't use solid ball or ...
