Hi there fellows.
I write from Greece.
I'm no hunter but I recently got a great gift from my new father in law.
He gave me a fantastic rifle from Holland & Holland and I'm trying to find out the gun's past glory and general info.
My father in law got it from his father when they lived in Medani-Sudan during the past century.
He hunt with it for deers and bigger animals.
The data that exists on the gun and the great looking case is
"Holland & Holland Magnum Mauser 240 Rifle" there is a date "14/9/1924" on the box and a serial number "644".
In the box are papers of historical value, like an envelop with the range report from Holland and Holland, and many more like papers for exporting to Ethiopia etc..
I'm trying to find out what kind of gun is it and how proud should I be of it.
Of course I'm already proud since he gave me a present his father gave him many years ago!
Anyway in historical value is it considered to be something unique for hunters?
Any info or link that I could search would be of great help to me as I want to create an archive on the gun and present it to my father in law.
Here are some pictures:

Hi Chris,

Your new father-in-law is trying to tell you that you need to look after your new wife in the way she is accustomed to being looked after! So take the hint, learn about shooting, go and do it, and leave her to run the rest of your life for you!

Some father-in-law. He's given you a real beauty there! You can be very proud of it. H & H .240 mag is excellent for medium sized game.

I've collected one of the pics and added it above.

Your first line of enquiry should be to Holland & Holland themselves. They'll be able to tell you the original specification and price, and will confirm the original purchaser.

If you go to Holland's web site you'll find there are a number of books about them, I recommend the Donald Dallas book.

How proud should you be ? Very, very proud indeed !
Are you sure it`s a .240 ? That`s a new calibre to me - I know that there was a .244 H&H Magnum which was - and is - a very fine deerstalking calibre.
Has your father-in-law got any more daughters he wants to marry off ?

Thank you all for your info that's been great! I emailed H&H and they asked 30 quid to identify the rifle... It's not much after all.
About the 240 calibre, I just gave you the number that was in written on a sign in the rifle case.

Again thank you ALL!
