I'm looking for an addition to the family of my pest control guns
a .22 rimfire , people keep telling me the semi auto is rubbish and not accurate and that i should go for a stantard bolt action with a 5 shot mag
In your honest opinions which would i be best off going with ?

Thanks WB

Hi Wabbit,

I've never owned a semi-auto .22 rifle but years ago shot with several and never had any trouble with accuracy. I do have a bolt action and put any inaccuracy down to myself or the ammo. There is a lot of rubbish ammunition on the market, stick to Eley and a low power wide angle scope.

Wabbitbosher,

I have a Marlin Model 60 22 lr semi auto that shoots groups smaller than 1" at 50 metres with almost all ammunition with the exception of Winchester hollowpoints which it won't even feed reliably. For a rifle that I bought at $ 134 brand new, I would not expect much more than that.

Also, if you don't mind spending a lot of money for a semi-auto rimfire rifle, try a Volquartsen www.volquartsen.com - the rifles are beautifully put together and in a recent Guns magazine test, outshot two "name" bolt actions quite comfortably. I would not at all be surprised if a Volquartsen shot smaller groups than any bolt available today.

Best wishes,

Mehul.

Hi Wabbit
I have 2 Winchester 290 semi auto's, both are old but one is out of the ark. both will shoot 1" at 50yds, but my advice would be to go for the HMR 17 or the Mk11 17 as you do not get ricochets for the bullets

good luck

Bosher, with a well set-up semi you can shoot the nuts off a gnat at 100 yards......one at a time if you like. Some of the semis available nowadays are phenomenally accurate.
Check-out South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies ( Everill Gate Farm, Broomhill, Wombwell, Barnsley. S73 0YQ. Tel. 01226 756332. Website is: www.rimfiremagic.co.uk ) - you won`t believe some of the rifles they produce and they`re really nice people.
I really like semi-autos and they`re often much more compact than bolt-actions which can be really useful. Don`t forget that you`ll need a moderator to sort the bunnies out most effectively.

Chaps, I've had to remove the picture of Bosher's rifle, not because it's too sexy for this web site but because it's too big! Can you ensure your pics are not more than 700 pixels wide please!
